I have run our garage in Mylapore for 37 years, and for the past 15 years I have been its senior painter. The damage I see on paint follows the weather. Faded roofs and chalky bonnets come from the sun. Rust bubbles around chips show up after the rains. Cars parked near the beach carry a thin film of salt that owners rarely notice. This guide covers what each of these does and what you can do about it without spending much.

How does Chennai's sun damage car paint?

Sunlight contains ultraviolet (UV) light, which slowly breaks down the clear coat, the transparent top layer of paint. As the clear coat weakens, it loses its gloss, turns hazy and eventually starts to peel in patches. Once it is gone, the colour layer underneath fades quickly and can turn chalky when you rub a finger on it.

The surfaces that face the sky take the most damage. On most cars, the roof, bonnet and top of the boot fade first, while the doors still look close to new. Red, black and dark blue cars show the change most clearly. White cars fade too, but it is harder to see.

Heat adds to the problem. A dark car parked in the afternoon sun gets hot enough on the surface that anything sitting on the paint, such as bird droppings or tree sap, reacts faster and marks the clear coat.

What helps against sun damage

  • Park in shade when you can. A covered parking spot does more for paint than any product.
  • Keep a layer of wax or sealant on the paint. It takes some of the wear in place of the clear coat.
  • Wash off droppings and sap the same day. In strong heat they can etch a mark into the clear coat within hours.
  • Deal with fading early. Mild haze can often be polished back. Once the clear coat peels, the panel needs paint.

What does the monsoon do to car paint?

Chennai gets most of its annual rain from the northeast monsoon, which runs roughly from October to December, according to the India Meteorological Department. That season brings three kinds of trouble for paint.

Standing water and mud

Waterlogged streets throw muddy water up the sides and underneath the car. Mud holds moisture against the paint and against the metal in wheel arches and door bottoms. If it is left to dry, it can scratch the paint when someone wipes it off with a dry cloth.

Chips turning into rust

Any chip or scratch that reaches bare steel will start to rust when it stays wet. During the monsoon, it stays wet for weeks. Rust spreads under the paint around the chip and lifts it into small bubbles. By the time bubbles show, the rust underneath is usually larger than it looks, and the repair involves grinding out the rust before painting.

Hidden dents

Rain and dirty water make small dents hard to see, and a lot of new dents happen in monsoon traffic. A clean, waxed car shows dents more clearly, so you can catch them before the paint over them cracks.

What helps during the monsoon

  • Wax before the rains start. Water beads and runs off a waxed surface, and droppings sit on the wax rather than eating into the clear coat.
  • Rinse off mud with water before wiping. Wiping dry mud drags grit across the paint.
  • Seal chips. A touch-up pen on a stone chip is a fair temporary fix to keep water off bare metal.
  • Check door bottoms and wheel arches after the season. These are the first places rust shows up.
  • Wax again after the monsoon ends, once the car has been washed properly.

Does sea air affect cars in Mylapore?

Mylapore is close to the Marina and the rest of the Chennai coast, and neighbourhoods along the coast get salty air, especially when the wind comes off the sea. Salt settles on the car as a fine film. It attracts moisture from the air, which means a salted surface stays damp longer than a clean one.

On intact paint, this mostly means the car needs washing more often, because the salt film dulls the finish. On bare metal, salt matters more. Salt water is far more corrosive to steel than fresh water, so an open chip on a car parked near the beach can rust faster than the same chip on a car parked inland. The underbody and the inside edges of doors, where salt and moisture collect, are worth checking too.

What do bird droppings and tree sap do to paint?

Chennai streets are lined with trees, and many cars are parked under them for shade. That trade-off brings droppings and sap. Bird droppings are acidic. Left in the sun, they soften the clear coat and leave a dull, etched patch shaped like the dropping, even after it is washed off. Tree sap hardens on the surface and can pull the clear coat when it is scraped.

Soak droppings and sap with water or a quick detailer spray for a minute to soften them, then lift them off gently. Do not scrape with a fingernail or a dry cloth. If an etched mark is already there, a light polish often removes it, as long as it has not gone through the clear coat.

How often should you wash and wax a car in Chennai?

There is no fixed rule, but a reasonable pattern for a car used daily in the city is:

  • Wash every week or two, and sooner after rain, mud or a drive along the beach road.
  • Wax every few months, and ideally just before and just after the northeast monsoon.
  • Polish only when needed, for haze or swirl marks, since polishing removes a little clear coat each time.

How you wash matters as much as how often. Use two buckets, one with soapy water and one to rinse the cloth, so grit goes into the rinse bucket instead of back onto the paint. Use a soft microfibre mitt, not an old towel or a stiff brush. Dry with a clean microfibre towel rather than letting water spots dry in the sun.

Are car covers good or bad for paint?

Both, depending on how they are used. A clean, soft-lined cover on a clean car keeps sun, dust and droppings off the paint. A dusty cover put on a dusty car, flapping in the wind for weeks, rubs fine grit into the clear coat and leaves swirl marks all over the car.

If you use a cover, wash the car before covering it, keep the cover clean, and make sure it fits well enough that it does not flap. In the monsoon, remove the cover after rain so trapped moisture can dry.

Do ceramic coatings and paint protection film help?

Both are extra layers on top of the clear coat. A ceramic coating is a hard, thin liquid layer that makes water and dirt slide off more easily and resists light etching from droppings better than wax. Paint protection film is a clear plastic sheet stuck onto the panels, most often the bonnet and front bumper, and it takes stone chips in place of the paint.

Neither one repairs damage that is already there. Any scratches, swirl marks or faded patches under a coating stay visible and get sealed in. If you plan to add a coating or film, have the paint corrected and any chips repaired first, so what gets protected is paint in good condition.

What should you do after driving through floodwater?

Many Chennai drivers end up in standing water at some point during the monsoon. Floodwater carries mud, sewage and grit, and it gets into places that ordinary rain does not reach: the underbody, the inside of the wheel arches, the lower edges of the doors and the gaps behind the bumpers. Left there, that muck holds moisture against the metal for days.

After driving through deep water, a few steps help:

  • Rinse the underbody and wheel arches with plenty of fresh water within a day or two, before the mud dries hard.
  • Open the doors and check the bottom edges. Door bottoms have small drain holes that can block with mud, trapping water inside the door.
  • Look behind the bumpers if you can, where silt collects against the body.
  • Check the lower panels for new chips. Debris in floodwater hits the sills and lower doors, and fresh chips there rust quickly.

If the water came above the floor of the car, the mechanical and electrical side needs checking too, not just the paint. Our garage handles general servicing, mechanical and electrical repairs alongside bodywork, so the car can be checked in one visit. See the servicing and repairs section for details.

What signs mean your paint needs a professional?

Some weather damage can be handled at home. These signs mean it is time for a garage to look at it:

  • The clear coat is peeling or flaking in patches, usually on the roof or bonnet
  • The paint feels chalky and leaves colour on your finger
  • Small bubbles have appeared around chips, scratches or panel edges
  • Brown rust stains are running from a seam or door bottom
  • A panel looks a different shade from the one beside it

Haze and light etching can often be polished. Peeling clear coat, rust and faded colour need paint. When we repaint a faded panel, we blend the new colour into the next panel, because the rest of the car has also aged in the same sun and a straight factory-code match can stand out against it. For the choice between repainting one panel or the whole car, see full car repaint vs panel repaint.

How can Yours Automobile help?

Our garage in Mylapore handles most weather damage: car wash and interior cleaning, detailing and polishing to bring back gloss, sealing and repairing chips before rust spreads, and repainting panels in our own paint booth when the clear coat has failed. The details are on the detailing and car wash and car painting sections of our services page.

If you are not sure whether a dull panel needs polish or paint, the scratch guide explains the fingernail test, which works for weathered paint too.

Before the rains: WhatsApp a photo of any chips, faded panels or rust spots to +91 99419 51161. We will tell you what can wait and what should be sealed before the monsoon. Visit us on Rangaiah Garden Street, Mylapore; hours are on the contact page.

Frequently asked questions

When should I wax my car in Chennai?

Wax before the northeast monsoon, which brings most of Chennai's rain between October and December, and again after it ends. A waxed surface makes water bead and run off, and it gives bird droppings and mud a layer to sit on before they reach the clear coat.

Why is my car's red or black paint fading faster than other colours?

Strong sunlight breaks down the clear coat and pigments over time, and the change shows most on dark and red colours. The roof and bonnet usually fade first because they face the sun directly.

Does living near the sea affect car paint?

Salt in coastal air settles on the car and draws in moisture. On intact paint it mostly means more frequent washing. On chips and scratches that reach bare metal, it speeds up rust, so those are worth sealing early.

Are car covers good for paint?

A clean, soft-lined cover on a clean car helps keep sun and droppings off. A dusty cover that flaps in the wind acts like fine sandpaper and can leave swirl marks, so wash the car and the cover regularly.
